1. Le passé composé avec avoir

0/15 correct · 0 attempted
English explanation

Use the passé composé for a completed event in the past: something that happened and is finished. At A2, this is the main tense for telling what you did yesterday, last weekend, on a trip, or during a completed sequence of events.

Most French verbs form the passé composé with the present tense of avoir plus a past participle. Regular -er verbs usually form the participle in -é, regular -ir verbs in -i, and many -re verbs in -u. High-frequency irregular participles such as fait, pris, vu, lu, bu and eu must be learned.

In a normal affirmative sentence, the auxiliary changes with the subject but the past participle usually stays unchanged when avoir is used. Negative forms surround the auxiliary: Je n'ai pas travaillé. Time markers such as hier, samedi dernier and la semaine dernière often signal a completed past action.

Core rule: Subject + avoir (present) + past participle → J'ai parlé. / Nous avons fini. / Ils ont vendu.
Common mistake / exam tip: Do not choose être just because an action involves movement. Most verbs use avoir. In a negative passé composé, ne…pas surrounds the auxiliary: Je n’ai pas travaillé.

2. Le passé composé avec être

0/15 correct · 0 attempted
English explanation

A smaller group of common verbs forms the passé composé with être instead of avoir. At A2, you should recognize frequent movement and change-of-place verbs such as aller, venir, arriver, partir, entrer, sortir, monter, descendre, retourner, rentrer, tomber and rester.

When être is the auxiliary, the past participle normally agrees with the subject in gender and number. That means an extra -e for a feminine singular subject, -s for a plural subject, and -es for a feminine plural subject.

Do not choose être simply because a verb describes movement. The auxiliary belongs to the verb pattern and can also depend on how the verb is used. For example, Elle est sortie (she went out), but Elle a sorti la poubelle (she took the bin out). Reflexive verbs also use être and are treated separately.

Core rule: Subject + être (present) + past participle with agreement → Elle est arrivée. / Ils sont partis.
Common mistake / exam tip: Some verbs such as sortir, monter, descendre and retourner can take avoir when they have a direct object: J’ai sorti la poubelle. Learn the verb in context, not from a “movement = être” shortcut.

3. L'accord du participe passé avec être

0/15 correct · 0 attempted
English explanation

When a passé composé verb uses être, the past participle normally behaves like an adjective and agrees with the subject. This is visible in writing even when the final consonant is often silent in speech.

For a masculine singular subject, use the basic form: arrivé. For a feminine singular subject, add -e: arrivée. For a masculine or mixed plural group, add -s: arrivés. For an all-feminine plural group, add -es: arrivées.

At A2, focus first on identifying the subject correctly. Names such as Marie or Sophie require the feminine form; plural nouns such as les garçons require plural agreement; les filles require feminine plural agreement.

Core rule: arrivé → arrivée → arrivés → arrivées according to the gender and number of the subject.
Common mistake / exam tip: With the simple être verbs in this lesson, agreement follows the subject. A mixed-gender plural group normally takes the masculine plural form: Paul et Anna sont venus.

4. Les verbes pronominaux au passé composé

0/15 correct · 0 attempted
English explanation

Reflexive verbs use a reflexive pronoun such as me, te, se, nous or vous. In the passé composé, reflexive verbs are formed with être. This is very common when describing routines in the past.

The reflexive pronoun comes before the auxiliary: je me suis, tu t'es, il/elle s'est, nous nous sommes, vous vous êtes, ils/elles se sont. The past participle follows.

At A2, learn the normal agreement pattern in simple reflexive sentences: Elle s'est levée, Ils se sont réveillés. More advanced agreement exceptions with body parts and direct objects can wait until later levels.

Core rule: Subject + reflexive pronoun + être + past participle → Elle s'est levée.
Common mistake / exam tip: For simple reflexive verbs at this level, learn the common agreement pattern shown here. More advanced cases such as Elle s’est lavé les mains have extra rules and are better studied later.

5. L'imparfait

0/15 correct · 0 attempted
English explanation

The imparfait describes past situations rather than isolated completed events. Use it for habits, repeated actions, descriptions, weather, age, feelings, and actions that were in progress.

To form the imparfait, take the nous form of the present tense, remove -ons, and add -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient. For example, nous parlons → parl- → je parlais. Être is irregular: j'étais, tu étais, il était, nous étions, vous étiez, ils étaient.

English translations vary. Depending on context, je travaillais may mean I was working, I used to work, or I worked regularly. The key idea is that the speaker presents the action as background, repeated, descriptive, or ongoing.

Core rule: Present nous stem – ons + -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient.
Common mistake / exam tip: Build the imparfait from the present nous form minus -ons. The major exception is être → ét-: j’étais, nous étions.

6. Passé composé ou imparfait ?

0/15 correct · 0 attempted
English explanation

French often combines the imparfait and passé composé in the same story. The imparfait creates the background: what was happening, what things were like, or what someone regularly did. The passé composé moves the story forward with a completed event.

A very common A2 pattern is an ongoing action in the imparfait interrupted by a shorter event in the passé composé: Je dormais quand le téléphone a sonné. The sleeping was already in progress; the phone ringing happened as a completed event.

Do not choose the tense only from the English translation. Ask how the speaker views the event. Description, habit and background point toward imparfait; a bounded completed event or sequence point toward passé composé.

Core rule: Background / habit → imparfait. Completed event / interruption → passé composé.
Common mistake / exam tip: Do not choose a tense only from a time word. Ask what the verb is doing: background/habit → imparfait; completed event/change → passé composé.

7. Le futur proche

0/15 correct · 0 attempted
English explanation

The futur proche is the everyday 'going to' future. Use it for plans, intentions, and events that are expected soon or are already connected to the present.

It is formed with the present tense of aller plus an infinitive. Only aller is conjugated: je vais, tu vas, il/elle va, nous allons, vous allez, ils/elles vont. The second verb stays in the infinitive.

With a negative sentence, ne...pas normally surrounds aller: Je ne vais pas sortir. Object pronouns usually come before the infinitive when they belong to that infinitive: Je vais le voir.

Core rule: aller in the present + infinitive → Je vais travailler.
Common mistake / exam tip: Only aller is conjugated in the futur proche. The second verb stays in the infinitive: Nous allons partir, not *nous allons partons*.

8. Le futur simple

0/15 correct · 0 attempted
English explanation

The futur simple expresses what will happen. At A2, use it for predictions, promises, future facts, and plans that are viewed more neutrally or at a greater distance than the futur proche.

For regular -er and -ir verbs, add the future endings directly to the infinitive. For -re verbs, remove the final -e first. The endings are -ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ont.

Several essential verbs have irregular future stems: être → ser-, avoir → aur-, aller → ir-, faire → fer-, venir → viendr-, pouvoir → pourr-, vouloir → voudr-. The future endings themselves remain regular.

Core rule: Future stem + -ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ont.
Common mistake / exam tip: For regular -re verbs, remove the final -e before adding future endings: attendre → j’attendrai. Frequent irregular stems must be learned.

9. Le passé récent

0/15 correct · 0 attempted
English explanation

The passé récent expresses an action that happened only a short time ago. In English it is usually translated with 'have/has just + past participle.'

French forms it with venir in the present tense, followed by de and an infinitive: je viens de manger, nous venons de partir. Before a vowel, de becomes d': elle vient d'arriver.

Unlike the passé composé, this structure does not require a past participle. The main action stays in the infinitive because tense is carried by venir.

Core rule: venir (present) + de/d' + infinitive → Je viens de finir.
Common mistake / exam tip: The recent past is venir de + infinitive. Do not use a past participle after de: Je viens de finir, not *je viens de fini*.

10. Les pronoms COD : le, la, les

0/15 correct · 0 attempted
English explanation

A direct object pronoun replaces a noun that receives the action directly, without à. At A2, the key third-person forms are le for masculine singular, la for feminine singular, and les for plural.

The pronoun goes before the conjugated verb: Je regarde le film → Je le regarde. Before a vowel sound, le and la become l': Je l'achète.

In compound tenses such as the passé composé, the pronoun comes before the auxiliary: Je l'ai vu. Agreement with a preceding direct object is an important written feature, but detailed mastery can be developed gradually.

Core rule: le / la / l' / les + conjugated verb → Je le vois. / Je l'achète. / Je les connais.
Common mistake / exam tip: The direct-object pronoun normally goes before the conjugated verb: Je le vois. Before a vowel sound, le/la becomes l’: Je l’écoute.

11. Les pronoms COI : lui, leur

0/15 correct · 0 attempted
English explanation

An indirect object pronoun can replace a person introduced by à with verbs such as parler à, téléphoner à, écrire à, répondre à and donner quelque chose à quelqu'un.

Use lui for one person, whether masculine or feminine, and leur for more than one person. Unlike le/la, gender does not change the form: à Paul → lui; à Marie → lui; aux parents → leur.

The pronoun normally goes before the conjugated verb: Je téléphone à Marie → Je lui téléphone. With an infinitive construction, position depends on which verb controls the object.

Core rule: à + one person → lui; à + several people → leur.
Common mistake / exam tip: Use lui/leur mainly for à + person: Je parle à Marie → Je lui parle. Do not automatically use them for every phrase beginning with à.

12. Le pronom Y

0/15 correct · 0 attempted
English explanation

The pronoun y most often replaces a place already mentioned. It can replace phrases beginning with à, au, à la, aux, en, dans, chez and other location expressions, depending on the sentence.

In English, y is often translated as 'there', but sometimes English does not need a separate word. In French, it prevents repetition: Tu vas au marché ? Oui, j'y vais.

Y normally goes before the conjugated verb. With a futur proche, it goes before the infinitive when it belongs to that infinitive: Je vais y aller. At A2, focus first on places.

Core rule: Place phrase → y, placed before the verb: J'y vais. / Nous y habitons.
Common mistake / exam tip: Y normally replaces a place or à + thing, not a person. For a person, keep a stressed pronoun: Je pense à Marie → Je pense à elle.

13. Le pronom EN

0/15 correct · 0 attempted
English explanation

The pronoun en commonly replaces a noun phrase introduced by de, du, de la, de l' or des. It is also used with quantities so the quantity can remain while the noun disappears.

English translations vary: en can mean some, any, of it, of them, about it, or may have no direct translation. French uses it to avoid repeating the same de-phrase.

En can also replace a place introduced by de (Elle revient de Paris → Elle en revient). For people, however, standard learner French normally keeps a stressed pronoun: Je parle de Paul → Je parle de lui, not *j’en parle* when you specifically mean the person.

Core rule: de + noun / quantity + noun → en: J'en veux. / J'en ai deux.
Common mistake / exam tip: En replaces de + thing/place or a quantity. For a person, French normally keeps a stressed pronoun: Je parle de Paul → Je parle de lui.

14. Le comparatif

0/15 correct · 0 attempted
English explanation

Use the comparative when comparing two people, objects, places or situations. With adjectives and adverbs, French uses plus ... que for more, moins ... que for less, and aussi ... que for equal comparison.

The adjective still agrees with the noun it describes: Marie est plus sportive que Paul. With nouns, the patterns change to plus de...que, moins de...que and autant de...que. At A2, recognize both structures.

Some common comparisons are irregular: bon → meilleur and bien → mieux. Do not say plus bon in standard French when you mean better.

Core rule: plus / moins / aussi + adjective + que; plus de / moins de / autant de + noun + que.
Common mistake / exam tip: Remember the irregular comparisons bon → meilleur and bien → mieux. With nouns, use plus de / moins de / autant de.

15. Le superlatif

0/15 correct · 0 attempted
English explanation

The superlative identifies the highest or lowest degree within a group: the biggest, the most interesting, the least expensive, and so on.

With adjectives, use le/la/les plus or le/la/les moins. The article and adjective agree with the noun: la plus grande ville, les moins chers. When the adjective normally comes after the noun, both patterns can occur according to the adjective.

Bon has the irregular superlative le meilleur / la meilleure / les meilleurs / les meilleures. Bien becomes le mieux when it is an adverb.

Core rule: le/la/les + plus/moins + adjective; bon → meilleur.
Common mistake / exam tip: The article in a superlative agrees with the noun: le plus grand, la plus grande, les plus grandes. For an adverb, use le plus / le moins: elle court le plus vite.

16. Les pronoms relatifs QUI, QUE et OÙ

0/15 correct · 0 attempted
English explanation

Relative pronouns connect two pieces of information about the same noun so that you do not repeat it. At A2, the three most useful forms are qui, que/qu’ and où.

Use qui when the missing word is the subject of the next verb: J’ai un ami qui habite à Paris. Use que/qu’ when the noun is the direct object: Voici le livre que j’aime.

Use où for a place or a time: C’est le café où nous nous retrouvons. / Le jour où je suis arrivé… A quick test is to look immediately after the gap: if a new subject is already present, que is often needed; if the gap itself performs the verb, use qui.

Core rule: qui = subject • que/qu’ = direct object • où = place/time.
Common mistake / exam tip: Qui is the subject of the following verb; que/qu’ is its direct object; où links a place or time. Check the role inside the relative clause.

17. La négation : jamais, plus, rien, personne

0/15 correct · 0 attempted
English explanation

At A2, French negation expands beyond ne...pas. Use ne...jamais for never, ne...plus for no longer/not anymore, ne...rien for nothing/not anything, and ne...personne for nobody/not anyone.

In a simple tense, these negative words usually surround the conjugated verb: Je ne vois rien. With personne, the usual pattern is Je ne vois personne. In everyday spoken French, ne is often dropped, but learners should recognize and produce the standard written form.

Meaning matters: toujours often contrasts with jamais; encore can contrast with plus; quelque chose can become rien; quelqu'un can become personne. In the passé composé, jamais, plus and rien usually come around the auxiliary, while personne normally follows the participle.

Core rule: ne + verb + jamais/plus/rien/personne; meaning determines the negative word.
Common mistake / exam tip: In everyday speech, French speakers often drop ne, but in careful written French and DELF-style tasks keep the full negative structure: Je ne vois rien.

18. Depuis, pendant et il y a

0/15 correct · 0 attempted
English explanation

Depuis, pendant and il y a all refer to time, but they answer different questions. Depuis links a starting point or duration in the past to a situation that is still true now.

Pendant gives the duration of a completed action or a clearly bounded period: J'ai étudié pendant deux heures. Il y a tells how long ago something happened: Je l'ai vu il y a deux jours.

A common English-French difference is tense choice with depuis. French normally uses the present for an action that started in the past and is still continuing: J'habite ici depuis trois ans.

Core rule: depuis = since/for and still continuing; pendant = for a bounded duration; il y a = ago.
Common mistake / exam tip: Depuis connects a past starting point to now; pendant gives a bounded duration; il y a means “ago.” Do not translate English for with one fixed French word.

19. Si + présent

0/15 correct · 0 attempted
English explanation

At A2, si introduces real or possible conditions: if this happens, then this result is possible. The si-clause normally uses the present tense for this basic pattern.

The result clause can use the present, futur simple, futur proche, an imperative, or another suitable form depending on meaning. A classic rule is that French does not normally put the futur simple directly after si in this real-condition pattern.

Si becomes s' only before il and ils: s'il, s'ils. It does not contract before elle: si elle. This pattern is useful for plans, advice, instructions and likely future situations.

Core rule: Si + present → present / future / imperative. Not *si + future* in the basic real-condition pattern.
Common mistake / exam tip: In the basic real-condition pattern, do not put the futur simple immediately after si: Si j’ai le temps, je viendrai, not *si j’aurai le temps*.

20. Il faut, devoir et pouvoir

0/15 correct · 0 attempted
English explanation

French uses several common structures to express necessity, obligation, permission and possibility. Il faut + infinitive gives a general necessity: Il faut travailler. Devoir + infinitive gives a personal obligation: Je dois travailler.

Pouvoir + infinitive means can, be able to, or sometimes may/be allowed to depending on context. Because devoir and pouvoir are conjugated verbs, their endings change with the subject.

At A2, pay attention to the difference between a general rule and a personal duty. Il faut does not name the person grammatically; devoir does. Negatives can change the nuance: Il ne faut pas fumer means you must not smoke.

Core rule: il faut + infinitive; subject + devoir/pouvoir + infinitive.
Common mistake / exam tip: Il faut is impersonal—you do not say *je faut*. Use devoir for a personal obligation and pouvoir for ability/permission.

21. L'impératif

0/15 correct · 0 attempted
English explanation

The imperative is used for commands, instructions, invitations and advice. French has imperative forms for tu, nous and vous, but the subject pronoun is not written.

For most verbs, the imperative uses the corresponding present-tense form without the subject: tu prends → prends; nous prenons → prenons; vous prenez → prenez. For regular -er verbs, the final -s of the tu form is normally dropped: tu regardes → regarde.

Negative commands place ne...pas around the verb: Ne parle pas ! Reflexive pronouns change position and form in affirmative commands: Lève-toi ! In a negative command they return before the verb: Ne te lève pas !

Core rule: Tu/nous/vous present form without the subject; -er tu normally drops -s.
Common mistake / exam tip: The imperative normally has no written subject pronoun. With affirmative reflexive commands, the pronoun follows with a hyphen: Lève-toi !

22. L'accord des adjectifs

0/15 correct · 0 attempted
English explanation

French adjectives usually agree with the noun they describe in gender and number. This means the written form may change for masculine, feminine, singular and plural nouns.

A common pattern is to add -e for feminine and -s for plural: petit → petite → petits → petites. Many adjectives have spelling changes or irregular feminine forms, such as beau → belle, nouveau → nouvelle and vieux → vieille.

Some common adjectives appear before the noun, while many others appear after it. At A2, learn high-frequency placement patterns together with agreement rather than translating word order directly from English.

Core rule: Adjective form matches the noun's gender and number: un petit sac / une petite valise / des petits sacs.
Common mistake / exam tip: French adjectives agree in gender and number, but their position is also lexical. Do not assume every adjective goes after the noun: une belle maison, un petit café.

23. Les adverbes en -ment

0/15 correct · 0 attempted
English explanation

Adverbs describe how an action happens. Many French adverbs are formed from adjectives and correspond to English adverbs ending in -ly.

A common rule is to take the feminine form of an adjective and add -ment: lent → lente → lentement; heureux → heureuse → heureusement. If the masculine adjective already ends in a vowel, -ment may attach directly: vrai → vraiment.

Some forms have spelling changes or irregular patterns, such as prudent → prudemment and fréquent → fréquemment. At A2, focus on common useful forms and recognize that adverbs do not agree with the subject.

Core rule: Often feminine adjective + -ment → lente + ment = lentement.
Common mistake / exam tip: Many adverbs come from the feminine adjective + -ment, but there are spelling changes and irregular forms. Learn high-frequency items as complete words.

24. Les expressions de quantité

0/15 correct · 0 attempted
English explanation

Quantity expressions tell us how much or how many. Common A2 expressions include beaucoup de, peu de, assez de, trop de, un peu de, plus de and moins de.

After a quantity expression, French normally uses de or d' rather than du, de la or des: beaucoup de travail, beaucoup d'eau, peu de voitures. This is a key pattern to learn.

Some expressions give an exact quantity, such as un kilo de, une bouteille de, trois tasses de. The noun follows de, and the quantity itself carries the number information.

Core rule: quantity + de/d' + noun → beaucoup de temps, un peu d'eau, trois kilos de pommes.
Common mistake / exam tip: After most quantity expressions, use de/d’ without an article: beaucoup de café, un litre d’eau.

26. Les questions à l'oral et à l'écrit

0/15 correct · 0 attempted
English explanation

French has several common ways to ask a question. In everyday speech, you can keep normal word order and use rising intonation: Tu habites où ? A neutral standard form uses est-ce que: Où est-ce que tu habites ?

Written and more formal French may use inversion: Où habites-tu ? With a noun subject, French often keeps the noun and adds a pronoun in inversion: Marie vient-elle ? At A2, you should understand these common forms even if you prefer one reliable pattern when speaking.

Question words include où, quand, pourquoi, comment, combien, quel/quelle/quels/quelles and qui. The position changes with the question structure, so practice complete patterns rather than isolated words.

Core rule: Intonation / est-ce que / inversion are all valid question strategies; use the correct question word.
Common mistake / exam tip: French has several question registers. Intonation is common in conversation, est-ce que is neutral and very useful, and inversion is more formal. Keep the question word at the front.

A2 REVIEW

27. Les articles partitifs

0/15 correct · 0 attempted
English explanation

French uses du, de la and de l' for an unspecified amount of something, especially food, drink and other uncountable substances. Des is used for an unspecified plural quantity.

Use du before masculine singular nouns, de la before feminine singular nouns, and de l' before a vowel or silent h. Examples: du pain, de la soupe, de l'eau.

After a normal negative with pas, the partitive normally becomes de/d’: Je ne bois pas de café; Je ne veux pas d’eau. A useful exception is after être, where the article is normally kept: Ce n’est pas du café. This lesson is A2 review because these forms must be automatic before more complex A2 production.

Core rule: du / de la / de l' / des for unspecified quantity; after most negatives → de/d'.
Common mistake / exam tip: After a normal negative with pas, partitive and indefinite articles usually become de/d’: Je ne bois pas de café. After être, the article is normally kept: Ce n’est pas du café.

A2 REVIEW

28. Les déterminants possessifs

0/15 correct · 0 attempted
English explanation

Possessive determiners show ownership or relationship: my, your, his, her, our, their. In French, the form agrees with the noun possessed, not with the owner.

Use mon/ma/mes, ton/ta/tes, son/sa/ses, notre/nos, votre/vos and leur/leurs. For example, Marie says mon frère and ma sœur; Paul also says mon frère and ma sœur.

The determiner agrees with the noun that is possessed, not with the owner. Also remember the sound rule before a feminine noun beginning with a vowel or silent h: mon amie, ton école, son histoire. This is an A2 review topic because these forms should be automatic in speaking and writing.

Core rule: Possessive form agrees with the possessed noun: mon frère / ma sœur / mes parents.
Common mistake / exam tip: A possessive determiner agrees with the thing possessed, not the owner. Before a feminine noun beginning with a vowel sound, use mon/ton/son: mon amie.

29. Parce que, comme, donc et alors

0/15 correct · 0 attempted
English explanation

To explain a reason, A2 learners commonly use parce que, and can also use comme when the reason is placed first. Parce que answers 'why?': Je reste parce que je suis fatigué.

Comme often introduces the reason at the beginning of the sentence: Comme il pleut, nous restons ici. Puisque can express a reason already known or obvious, but parce que remains the safest general-purpose connector at A2.

For consequences, use donc, alors or c'est pourquoi. These connectors help build longer A2 sentences by linking a cause to its result: Je suis fatigué, donc je vais dormir.

Core rule: Cause: parce que / comme. Consequence: donc / alors / c'est pourquoi.
Common mistake / exam tip: Parce que / comme introduce a cause; donc / alors / c’est pourquoi introduce a result. Do not swap cause and consequence mechanically.

30. Le conditionnel de politesse

0/15 correct · 0 attempted
English explanation

At A2, you need polite ways to ask for things in cafés, hotels, shops, stations and everyday services. French very often uses a few conditional forms to make a request softer and more courteous than a direct present-tense form.

The most useful chunks are je voudrais (“I would like”), j’aimerais (“I would like”), pourriez-vous… ? (“could you…?”), and est-ce que je pourrais… ? (“could I…?”). After these forms, use a noun or an infinitive depending on the sentence.

At this level, you do not need to master the entire conditional tense. Learn these high-frequency forms as functional patterns for ordering, booking, asking for help, requesting information and expressing a polite wish. Compare the tone: Je veux un café is direct; Je voudrais un café, s’il vous plaît is much more natural with a server.

Core rule: je voudrais / j’aimerais + noun or infinitive • pourriez-vous + infinitive ? • est-ce que je pourrais + infinitive ?
Common mistake / exam tip: Use these conditional forms to soften requests and wishes. At A2, focus on these high-frequency polite chunks rather than trying to master every conditional form.
